Obituary

Ms. Arlene Marie Coit, 59, passed away on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, comforted by the presence of family and the love of those who wished they could be there.

She was born on April 28, 1966, in Erie County, New York, the daughter of the late Richmond F. Stimson and Mary Ann Meindl Stimson. Raised in Cuba, New York, she spent her childhood playing in the woods, enjoying summers on the lake, and cherishing good times on the farm, where she developed a lifelong love for animals. Her family later relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, where she graduated from Moon Valley High School.

Arlene married John Coit, and together they began a new chapter marked by devotion and resilience. Guided by a deep sense of compassion and a calling to care for others, she pursued nursing at the St. James Nursing Program in Hornell, New York, laying the foundation for a lifelong career in healthcare.

Arlene and John made their home in South Carolina and there they raised their beautiful family. Arlene loved her family dearly, especially her grandchildren, and found joy in creating meaningful memories and giving the most thoughtful gifts. She also deeply loved her fur babies, Sascha and Oscar.

Arlene lived a life rooted in love, generosity, and self-sacrifice, always placing the needs of her family and friends before her own. She gave freely of herself and found her greatest joy in caring for others. In her final months, she was deeply cared for and surrounded by the love of her family.

Surviving are her son, Michael Kenneth (Katie) Coit of Effingham; daughters, Danielle Marie (Ryan) McElveen of Olanta and Alexandra Elizabeth (Nicolas) Young-Davis of Kathleen, Georgia; grandchildren, Mikey, Madi, and Ollie Coit; Nick and Alan McElveen; Brayden and Kinsey McMath; and Noah Young-Davis; and former husband and dear friend, John Coit.

She is also survived by her siblings: David F. Stimson (Margy), Michael R. Stimson, Dave R. Stimson (Cate), Annette Stimson, Tish Wyman and Marcia O’Donnell (Michael), along with many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.

In addition to her parents, Ms. Coit was preceded in death by her father and mother-in-law, Ken and Shelley Coit.

In keeping with Arlene’s wishes, no formal funeral services will be held. She asked that her family and friends honor her life in their own personal way.
