Barbara Ann Godwin Obituary

Mrs. Barbara Ann Anderson Godwin went to her Heavenly Home on November 23, 2022. She was 88 years old.

Barbara Ann was born in 1934 to Hubert DeVon Anderson Sr. and Lena Mae Tolson Anderson in Coward, South Carolina. She was a graduate of J.C. Lynch High School in Coward and she was the valedictorian of the 1952 graduating class. “Miss Barbara Ann” was the Vice-President of the State 4H Club, a beauty queen who won several beauty titles, a public speaker, and a published poet. She was also an athlete, winning several medals in track and she was a member of the State Champion Basketball team.

Prior to her marriage, as Barbara Ann Anderson, she attended Winthrop College in Rock Hill, S.C. She loved spending two years at Winthrop with her numerous friends, who were like sisters to her. Barbara Ann learned to play bridge with her friends, attended dances and served as a Resident Assistant in the dormitory her last year. “Miss Barbara Ann" especially loved her roommate and close friend,  Mrs. Bobbie Blackmon.

After two years at Winthrop, Barbara Ann accepted the marriage proposal of her beau, Jack Brunson Godwin of Lake City, S.C. She became a homemaker for her husband and their six children. After the sudden death of her husband Jack in 1972, Mrs. Godwin returned to school and became a nurse at the Florence General Hospital nursing program. Mrs. Godwin worked for over 20 years at the Lake City – Scranton Nursing Home, providing nursing care and comfort to hundreds of patients. She would treat each patient like family, and she was a comfort to many families that placed their loved ones in her care.

Mrs. Godwin retired from the nursing home to take care of her own mother during her final years, until Mrs. Anderson passed away at the age of 91 years.

“Miss Barbara Ann”, known as G.G. (Grandmother Godwin) to her many grandchildren, loved reading, music, singing, nature, growing flowers and seeing movies with her daughters and grandchildren. She especially loved to watch Westerns on T.V., the Andy Griffith show, the Lawrence Welk show, and the Carol Burnett show. She enjoyed laughter, and she experienced much joy and laughter with her children, her brother, and her grandchildren. She also had her share of tears in her lifetime, and she was an example to her children on how to weather life’s many storms with grace, dignity and strength.

Mrs. Godwin was a Christian who accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior. Prior to her husband’s death, she was a member of Cameron United Methodist Church. After her husband died, she became a member of the Lake City First Baptist Church for many years, where she was baptized.  She had both the face and the voice of an angel, and many who heard her singing at church remarked on her beautiful voice. In her younger years, she often sang at public gatherings.

Mrs. Godwin was predeceased by her husband Jack Brunson Godwin, her parents Hubert DeVon Anderson Sr. and Lena Mae Tolson Anderson, her brother Hubert DeVon (“Sonny”) Anderson Jr. of Jacksonville, Florida, her daughter Yrandee DeVon Godwin, a beloved uncle John Anderson Jr., and a very beloved aunt Vivian Anderson Carlson (who was like an older sister to Barbara Ann as well as a very close friend).

“Miss Barbara Ann” is survived by her son Ronald Page “Ron” (Rachel) Godwin of Columbia; her daughters Derylyn Ann Godwin of Georgetown; Beverly Lemaena Godwin of Myrtle Beach; Lisa Simone (Harry) Collins of Rock Hill; and Jacqueline Shawn (Joey) McDaniel of Lake City. “G.G.” is also survived by her grandchildren: Shannon Michelle (Freeman) Spence of Pawleys Island; Amber Rose Prosser of Coward; Chance Darrell Godwin (Sydney Livingston) Adams of Georgetown; Kayley McDaniel of Lake City; Shay Brunson (Emily) Godwin of Conway; Summer Godwin (Henry) Edmondson of Liberty, Texas: Forestt (Brittany) McDaniel of Johnsonville; and Morell (Viktor Moore) Collins of Lancaster.  “G.G.” is also survived by her great grandchildren Katherine Rose “Katie” Spence and Sebastian O’Riley Spence, both of Pawleys Island; Easton Wade Prosser of Coward; James-Michael Gray Godwin and Eden Elizabeth Godwin of Conway; Emeri “Emmie” Rose Adams of Georgetown; Raleigh McDaniel of Johnsonville, and another baby great granddaughter “on the way”.

Miss Barbara Ann is  survived by her brother and sisters-in-law, Sandy and Susan Godwin, Betty Jean Godwin, and Doris Anderson, along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.   She was also beloved by many friends and relatives, coworkers, and countless puppy dogs including Spot, Stone, Shep, Red, Blue, Sam, Lucky, Happy, Frisky, Runt, Sir Roo-Roo and especially Wolf, and her “grand-puppies” Illette, Joleigh, Robbie and Penny, and a bird named “Poe”.
