Ms. Betty Jean McCutcheon Whitehead, 93, passed away peacefully Friday, July 19, 2024, at The Lakes at Litchfield in Pawleys Island, SC.
Born on August 27, 1930, in Lake City, SC, she was the daughter of the late Frances Elma McCutcheon and Henry Eugene McCutcheon, Sr.
She leaves behind her son, Dr. Robert Thomas (Joni) Whitehead, III, of Pawleys Island, SC; two granddaughters, Hannah (Will) Brown of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Cameron (Cliff) Barron of Lake City, SC; and one great-granddaughter, Ellison Thomas Barron. She is also survived by two loving sisters, Patsy M. Brown of Beaufort, SC and Janice M. Guy of Scranton, SC; and many nieces and nephews.
Those who preceded her in death are siblings, John (Derryl) McCutcheon, Eugene “Butch” McCutcheon, Janie M. (Hagood) Floyd, Frances M. (Willis) Buddin, James A. Brown, and James B. Guy; niece, Amy Michelle Guy; and nephew, Henry “Rocky” McCutcheon.
Ms. Whitehead graduated from Lake City High School and Queens College. She enjoyed a long career as an elementary school teacher working in Charleston and Williamsburg County schools, as well as at The Carolina Academy in Lake City, where she also volunteered countless hours at athletic events. During her summer breaks from school, she loved gardening with her siblings, spoiling her granddaughters, and delivering Meals on Wheels. As a member of Lake City First Baptist Church, she participated in the Women’s Mission Union, volunteered at Wednesday worship, and taught Sunday School.
A graveside service will be held Monday, July 22, 2024, at 10:00 am at Lake City First Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the Skilled Nursing Staff at The Lakes of Litchfield, the Staff at Florence Place Assisted Living, and Tidelands Community Hospice for the wonderful love and care they have shown.
