Mr. Carlie Brooks Matthews, 81, husband of Claire Moore Matthews, passed away Saturday, September 6, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his family.
Mr. Carlie was born on December 25, 1943, in Coward, son of the late Carl Manton Matthews and Alma Anderson Matthews. He was a graduate of JC Lynch High School in Coward and was a member of The Bible Temple. Mr. Matthews was a farmer until 1995 and then started his own landscaping business, Carlie’s Total Lawn Care, managing the business until 2019. A true outdoorsman at heart, Mr. Carlie loved spending time in nature, especially fishing and deer hunting, passions he shared with his son and grandchildren. He also found great joy in the simple things, often stopping by Powell’s Grocery, a place he enjoyed visiting regularly.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Claire Moore Matthews of Coward; his children, Jody Brooks Matthews and Heather Matthews (Jeremiah) Causey, both of Coward; grandchildren, Caleb Brooks (Madison Franks) Matthews of North Charleston, Carmen Louise (Carson Mixon) Matthews and Carley Danielle Gerald, both of Coward; great grandchildren, Kyson James Mixon and Rollins Brix Mixon; sister, Elaine (Norman) McElveen; and numerous nieces and nephews, friends and extended family.
Mr. Carlie was preceded in death by his sisters, Ann Matthews (William) Bragdon and Lavonne Matthews (Bob) Hamilton; niece, Allison Dawn McElveen; father-in-law, James W. “Jim” Moore and mother-in-law, Virginia Coker Moore.
The family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to Amedysis Hospice, Jerry and Brandy Fennel, Josephine McFadden and Denise Bryant, Amber Lee, for her loving attention and care even when she was off duty; Jimmy Weaver for always being so patient. Special thank you to Jimmy McGee and Diane Thomas for their faithful visits and special friendship.
Funeral services will be 3:00 PM, Monday, September 8, 2025, at Carolina Funeral Home Chapel, with burial to follow at The Garden of Rest at The Bible Temple, Coward.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Sunday, September 7, 2025, at Carolina Funeral Home.
