Chesley Lyon Obituary

Chesley Emerson Lyon, 89, husband of Elsie Kelly Matthews-Lyon, died Thursday, May 7, 2020, at his residence.

Mr. Lyon was born in Bristol, TN, on July 28, 1930, son of the late Robert Lyon, Sr. and Martha Richardson Lyon. He got his bachelors and masters from John Marshall School of Law. Mr. Lyon served in the United States Army in the 33 Infantry and 1st Calvary during Korea War from 1947 – 1954.  After returning from Korea he worked for the Atlanta Police Department, walking a beat and then as an investigator.  He retired from NICB (National Insurance Crime Bureau) in 1993.

Surviving are his wife, Elsie Lyon of Lake City; daughters, Marianne (Rob Howard) Lyon of Sylvia, NC, Virginia Lyon of Freehold, NJ and Susan Lyon of Athens, GA; son, Robert (Angela) Lyon of Dubai and Spain; stepdaughters, Donna Matthews (Marty) Martin of Newport News, VA and Renee Matthews (Bill) Frederick of Williston; stepson, William Eddie (Cyndi) Matthews of Scranton; two sisters, Helen Barker of Paris, TN and Shirley Netherland of Goochland, VA; grandchildren, William (Natalia) Hemp, Jackie and Samantha Lyon, Lizzy (Will) Reese, Myles McIntyre, Jaime Bush, Cory Bush, Lauren F. (Jason) Byars, Blake (Grace) Matthews, Rev. Jesse Matthews, Patrick Matthews and Nick Matthews; great granddaughter, Sadie Belle Hemp; great grandsons, Jackson E. Byars, Eli Byars and Austin Byars; and a special sister-in-law, Betty Lyon of Dallas, TX; many special nieces and nephews; and Bear Hunting Buddies.

Mr. Lyon was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Jr., Jack, Aaron and Lewis Lyon; his sisters, Betty Netherland and Florence Lyon; and his grandson, Will Frederick.  

Due to COVID-19, services will be private.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Homestead Hospice, Angela McCara, Lynne Grier, Danita Washington, Karen Ham, Dr. Mims and special care givers, Teresa, Tamara, Lauren and Dr. Wade Lamb.

Memorials may be made to Shriners Hospital, Greenville, SC, St Jude Hospital, or charity of one's choice.
