Dexter Collins Obituary

Dexter Collins, 72, husband of Sarah Collins, died Wednesday, September 19, 2018, at McLeod Hospice House, Florence.

Mr. Collins was born on July 25, 1946 in Coward, son of the late John Douglas Collins and Ollie McAllister Collins. Dexter would say that he lived in the "Garden Spot of the World" in Coward, SC.  He loved to tell everyone that he received his education from the J. C. Lynch Institute of Higher Learning & World Education Center.  Dexter was a very talented licensed Commercial and Residential Builder.  He was an active member of the Florence Baptist Temple, as long as his health allowed, where he was a member of the choir and performed in the Singing Christmas Tree for 15 years.

Dexter loved to celebrate Thanksgiving by entertaining family and friends for 15 years.  He also had an annual BBQ for 45 years where the children enjoyed playing pool, ping pong & fireworks; and the adults would sit around an open fire talking, laughing & eating all kinds of home-made goodies.  Dexter enjoyed hunting, fishing, snow skiing, traveling, taking his grandchildren on regular mountain trips, and spending time with his nieces & nephews.  He opened his home to everyone with open arms.  Dexter was an exceptional person who loved helping his family and the people in his community.

Surviving are his wife, Sarah Floyd Collins of Coward; sons, Dexter J. (Bobbie Fulghum) Collins of Scranton and John Dannie (Jessica Lynn) Collins of Coward; grandchildren, Aspen Collins of Florence, John "Boogie" Collins and Jordan Collins, both of Coward; siblings, Randolph Collins of Coward, Charles (Peggy) Collins of Florence, and Donnie Mae Lee of Georgia; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Collins was preceded in death by his siblings, Gertrude Collins McGee, Robert L. Collins, J.D. Collins, and Wayne Collins.

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M., Saturday, September 22, 2018, at Carolina Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at New Town Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M., Friday, September 21, 2018, at Carolina Funeral Home and at other times at the home, 462 Mallard Road, Coward.

The family would especially like to thank Glen Turner, Rosalind Collins, and Reverend Sherwood Lee for their love and concern for Dexter and his family during this time.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 950 – 48th Avenue, North, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.
