Eddie Lamar Matthews

Mr. Eddie Lamar Matthews, 84, husband of Doris Mary Matthews, passed away March 23, 2025, at his home in Coward, SC.

Mr. Matthews was born August 30, 1940 in Florence, SC, son of the late Earl Stewart Matthews and Annie Ruth Prosser Miles. Mr. Matthews lived a life of unwavering dedication to his family, community, and country. He grew up in Coward, SC farming as a young child. He joined the military and served in the Navy, Army, Airforce, and National Guard. His time in the military took him all over the world spanning from Guam to Antarctica. After retiring from the military, he served his community as a teacher in the studies of agricultural mechanics. He later served as Mayor for the Town and Coward. He returned to farming during his retirement years continuing to pass along his wealth of knowledge and experience to his grandsons and family. He was a faithful husband married to his wife for 57 years. He attended The Bible Temple since its inception.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Doris Matthews; daughter, Linda (James) Pate; grandsons, Scotty (Mary Alice) Dangerfield and John Lurie (Emily) Pate; great grandchildren, Ashley Hilbourn and Noah Dangerfield; great great grandchildren, Keely McClam, Talyn McClam, Mary Savage Hilbourn, Kaiden Hilbourn, and Kaylynn Hilbourn; brother, Larry (Wilma) Matthews; sister, Janice Hopkins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Helen Springs; step-father, Wilbur Miles; and brothers, Ssgt. Earl Matthews Jr. and Charlie Matthews.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM, Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at Bible Temple with burial to follow at the church cemetery, The Garden of Rest.

The family will have receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
