Mrs. Ernestine Conway Smith, 98, formerly of Johnsonville, SC & Pawleys Island, SC, widow of Everett Calvin Smith, passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at home in Sherman, TX, after an illness.
Mrs. Smith was born Ernestine Lenore Conway on January 20, 1926, in Morristown, NJ. She was the daughter of Alfred Felix Conway and Lenore Bischoff Conway. She grew up in Morristown, NJ and graduated for Morristown High School. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY. She worked for Allied Chemical Corporation of Morristown as a chemist. She is predeceased by Everett Calvin Smith, whom she met and married while working there. She was primarily a homemaker, but earned a Masters of Education and taught high school Mathematics for two years before retiring.
Ernestine was a devout Catholic her whole life, a member of the Children of Mary in College and President of the Altar Society at St. James Church in Basking Ridge, NJ. She served as a Eucharistic Minister for Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church. She was instrumental in obtaining a building and founding St. Patrick’s Catholic Mission in Johnsonville and a building for the Johnsonville Public Library. She served as President of Johnsonville Women’s Club and was an avid golfer (Wellman Ladies Club Champion), enjoyed playing Duplicate Bridge (Master) and doing crossword puzzles. She loved college football, especially watching Notre Dame where her brother went to school. But she soon became a fan of Clemson, Tennessee, and NC State for other family members. She loved her family and will be greatly missed.
Surviving are her daughters, Patricia S. (Michael) Evans of Sherman, TX, and Christine Smith of Johnsonville, SC; three grandchildren, Amanda Owens of Johnsonville, SC, Paul Evans and Catherine (Christopher) Corbett, both of Pottsboro, TX; five great-grandchildren; Taylor (Laura) Strickland of Johnsonville, SC, Clare, Christy, Caroline, and Charles Corbett of Pottsboro, TX; and two great-great-grandchildren; Lawson and Gavin Strickland of Johnsonville, SC.
Ernestine was predeceased by her parents; Alfred Felix Conway & Lenore Bischoff Conway; her brother, George Alfred Conway and his wife Elizabeth; and a grandson, Richard Evans.
A Rosary Service will be 5:00 PM, Monday, June 10, 2024, at Carolina Funeral Home Chapel, Scranton, SC with visitation to follow until 7:00 PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church, Pawleys Island, SC, with inurnment to follow at Precious Blood of Christ Columbarium. The service will be livestreamed and can be viewed by visiting the church’s website @ www.pbocchurch.com.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church Scholarship Fund, 1633 Waverly Road, Pawleys Island, SC 29585 or to a charity of one’s choice.
