Mrs. Fairlyn Poston Odom, 79, of Johnsonville, SC, passed away after a long battle with kidney disease, on April 1, 2025, at Lowcountry Community Hospice House in Summerville, SC.
Those who knew her sense of humor will find it as no surprise that she made her “Grand Exit” on April Fools’ Day.
Mrs. Odom was born on November 25, 1945, in Florence County, daughter of the late Percy Delance Poston and Fairalee Johnson Poston. A proud Johnsonville native, Fairlyn was a 1963 graduate of Johnsonville High School, attended Columbia College, and was a member of the first four-year graduating class of Francis Marion College — a fact she wore with pride. She later earned her master’s degree from Coastal Carolina University, proving once and for all that learning (and a little stubbornness) runs deep in the Poston bloodline.
Fairlyn dedicated 35 years of her life to teaching in Florence County School District 5, where she shaped generations of students with equal parts wisdom and wit. Her shelf was decorated with accolades, including the coveted Golden Apple Award — but it was the lasting impact on her students that mattered most to her. Beyond the classroom, she was a former member of the Johnsonville Junior Women’s Club and a deeply active and loving member of Johnsonville First Baptist Church, where her faith was as steady as her sense of humor.
Surviving are her son, Will (Dixie) Bullock of Charleston; sister, Louise Mace of Johnsonville; granddaughters, Jade Bullock & Iris Bullock, both of Charleston and Emmeri Poston of Johnsonville; grandson, Ro Bullock of Charleston; nephews, David Mace & Brad Mace, both of Johnsonville, Bill (Miriam) Mace of Georgetown and Jim Parr of Prosperity; nieces, Leslie Poston (Pat) Rowell of Beaufort and Lee Parr of Pensacola, FL; sister-in-law, Mary Frances Floyd of Sumter; and extended family members.
Mrs. Odom was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Odom; son, Wallace Odom; brother, Delance Poston; sister, Betty Jo Parr; nephew, Lance Poston; brothers-in-law, Billy Mace, Jim Parr, Sr. and Roy Odom; sister-in-law, Jane Geddings.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Sunday, April 6, 2025, at Carolina Funeral Home, 215 East Hwy 378, Scranton, SC 29591.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Monday, April 7, 2025, at Johnsonville First Baptist Church, 145 N. Georgetown Hwy, Johnsonville, SC 29555. Burial, directed by Carolina Funeral Home, to follow at Garden of Devotion, 800 S. Georgetown Hwy, Johnsonville, SC 29555.
Memorials may be made to Johnsonville First Baptist Church Youth Ministry, PO Box 314, Johnsonville, SC 29555 or National Kidney Foundation @ https://www.kidney.org
