George Alton “Al” Lawrence, Jr., 75, of Lake City, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, April 15, 2025. Born in Florence County on March 14, 1950, he was the son of the late George Alton Lawrence, Sr. and Audrey Moore Lawrence.
Al was a man of few words, but when he spoke, his words carried weight. Known for his favorite saying, “It is what it is,” he lived a life marked by quiet strength, deep devotion to family, and an unwavering faith. An avid outdoorsman, Al loved hunting and fishing, often finding peace and joy along the banks of Lynches River. He had a heart for animals and never turned away a stray in need. Above all, he cherished his role as “Pop” to his grandchildren, spending as much time as he could with them and passing on his wisdom and gentle nature. He was also a faithful man who read his Bible every single day and had read through it multiple times, finding strength and guidance in its words.
He is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Katrina Vause Lawrence; sons, Matt McMillian (Kellie), Justin Filyaw (Abby), and Clay Filyaw (Tiffany); grandchildren, Samantha, Caebrey, Rawlings, and Briggs; brother, Herman Lawrence; sister, Jane Lawrence; nieces and nephews, John, Stephanie, Jenny, and Skylar; and extended family members, James Barr, Stoney Singletary, and Bill Singletary.
Al was preceded in death by his brother, John Franklin Lawrence; sister, Rachele Lawrence Bline; and a nephew, Michael Bline.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the Amedisys Hospice staff, Dr. Ghalayini, and Home Health nurse Roxanne for their compassionate care and support.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 18, 2025, at Lee Cemetery in Lake City, SC. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Florence Humane Society, 1434 S. McCurdy Road, Florence, SC 29506.
