Gerald Hanna, Sr. Obituary

Lieutenant Gerald Morgan Hanna, Sr., 78, husband of Judy Altman Hanna, passed Thursday, December 17, 2020, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence.

Lt. Hanna was born on October 19, 1942 in Williamsburg County, son of the late Johnny Udell "JU" Hanna and Willa Snow Lambert Hanna. He was a 1960 graduate of Johnsonville High School and attended Little Bethel Freewill Baptist Church in Johnsonville. Lt. Hanna was a member of Leo Masonic Lodge #310, Scottish Rites and Shriners. He retired from CSX Railroad as a dispatcher in 1987. Lt. Hanna served as a Reserve Deputy and an ambassador for the Sheriff in the Johnsonville Community for 53 years. Through his service as a Reserve Deputy, he saved the tax payers of Florence County countless dollars, freeing up patrol deputies to handle other calls in the County. Lt. Hanna exemplified humble, faithful service, never complained or criticized. His desire was only to serve, which he gladly did. Lt. Hanna was a member of South Carolina State Sheriff's Association. He received Florence County Reserve Deputy of the Year award in 2004/2005, received Resolution of Appreciation from Florence County Council in 2011 and the Distinguished Police Service Award in 2016. Lt. Hanna enjoyed working at Johnsonville Middle School as a SRO and took pride in escorting funerals for his community.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Judy Altman Hanna of Johnsonville; son, Will (TJ) Hanna of Johnsonville; grandchildren, Morgan Hanna (Taylor) Drucker of Johns Island, Trey (fiancée, Karley) Hanna, Kody Hanna and Justin Hanna, all of Johnsonville; daughter-in-law, Sheila Watts Hanna of Mayesville; sister, Pansy Hanna (Gerald) Stone of Johnsonville and sister-in-law, Betty Stone Hanna of Johnsonville.

Mr. Hanna was preceded in death by his son, Gerald Morgan "JD" Hanna, Jr.; brother, Stanley Udell Hanna; father and mother-in-law, Dot and Vera Eaddy Altman.

Funeral services will be 3:00 PM, Sunday, December 20, 2020, at Carolina Funeral Home Chapel, Scranton, with burial to follow at Garden of Devotion, Johnsonville.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 3:00 PM, Sunday, December 20, 2020, at Carolina Funeral Home.

Due to COVID-19, the family request for everyone to wear a mask and please maintain the 6 foot social distancing.  The family also request everyone to please refrain from hand shaking and hugging one another.
