Mr. Thomas Gerald Prosser, 70, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, January 3, 2025.
Gerald was born on September 18, 1954, in Florence County, son of the late Ira Lacy Prosser and Annie Ruth Miles Prosser. As a result of a Lynches River diving accident when he was fifteen years old in which he injured several vertebrae in his neck, Gerald lost the use of his legs and retained only partial use of his arms. He was confined to a wheelchair for essentially his entire life. After his injury, he graduated from J.C. Lynch High School in Coward, SC. He later attended and graduated from Francis Marion College, with honors. He worked in tax and accounting after completing college. He also tutored many high school and college students, for many years, in a variety of subjects. Gerald was a life-long member of Scranton Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, taught a Sunday School class, served as treasurer, did children’s sermons, and regularly gave Wednesday night devotionals. Gerald lived in Scranton with his mother, Annie Ruth Prosser, until her passing in 2009. A devoted mother, she provided daily care for Gerald and the two of them had a very special relationship.
To know Gerald was to love him. He was always generous with his talents and his time. Gerald’s life was an example of faith, courage and positivity in the face of adversity. He never let his disability define him, and lived his life with a smile on his face.
Surviving are his sister, Gwen P. (Ritchie) Lee of Coward and brother, Julian (Harriet) Prosser of Scranton; along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Terry M. Prosser
Graveside services will be 3:00 PM, Sunday, January 5, 2025, at Scranton United Methodist Church Cemetery.
