July 25, 2022 – With great sadness, deep respect and most appreciation, sons Ricky and Sean Carter announce the loss of beloved mother dear, Gwendolyn Powell Carter, to cardiopulmonary disease at 79 years of age. A faithful Christian servant of God, her later years were a time of grace when her life was instructed and molded by frailty, when she learned to accept help and walk gently. These fragile last years of her time on Earth included escapes thru shopping and dining across South Carolina’s Lowcountry and Pee Dee, with travels to Cumberland Island, Georgia and Kapalua, Maui. The family wishes to thank the patient, compassionate and resourceful care teams McLeod Health, MUSC, Regency Critical Care, Roper Rehab, Encompass, The Palms and Amedisys.
Favorites included tropical fruit, sweet tea, chocolate meringues, and watching NASCAR, Young & Restless, Bold & Beautiful, Young Sheldon and Jeopardy.
Welcomed to Heaven and preceded in death by a band of angels – daughter Elizabeth Ann Carter, son David Carter, husband Ernest Carter, sister Elnetia Gaskins, brothers John William Powell and Larry Powell and parents Queen and Harold Powell.
Left to cherish mom’s easy-going Southern life, survived by neighbors, nieces, nephews, cousins, and grandson Travis (Jesse) Carter of Cassatt, special first cousin Diane Dennis and brother Lil Bud (Yolanda) Powell both from the homestead Lake City. She enjoyed lifelong friendships across Lake City, Daniel Island and South Florence communities and with coworkers Lake City Manufacturing and Elastic Corp of America - Hemingway, where she retired.
Friends and coworkers are welcomed as family traditionally remember, honor, and bless her remains at Carolina Funeral Home, 11:00 AM, Thursday, July 28, 2022, with visitation one hour prior to the service.
Private burial and final committal for immediate family to follow at Hanna Cemetery.
