Obituary

Mr. Harold Davis Godwin, 89, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, after a long battle with a lung illness.

Harold was born on September 4, 1935, in Coward, South Carolina, to the late Rembert Hoyt Godwin and Mary Alice “Peggy” Powell Godwin. 

Harold is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marian Godwin; his son, Bert S. Godwin (Holly); his daughter, Joy VanDaele (Michael); his grandchildren, Grace Godwin, Ellie Godwin, Luke Godwin, Emma VanDaele, and Sarah VanDaele; and his sister-in-law, Mary Godwin. He was also loved by numerous nieces and nephews whom he considered his own children.

He is predeceased by his parents, Rembert and Peggy, along with his four siblings: Billy Paul Godwin, James “Buddy” Godwin, his wife, Virginia; Edith “Sis” Clark and her husband, A.L.; and “Dean” Cassidy.

Harold served with distinction in the United States Army, serving in Military Police/Intelligence during the Korean War. Receiving the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and United Nations Service Medal. He served on the South Carolina Farm Bureau board for many decades, with a term as the South Carolina Farm Bureau President during the 1980s.  Harold also served as President of the South Carolina Dairy Association in the early 1980s.  Harold had been a faithful servant of the Scranton Baptist Church, serving as a deacon, choir member, and Sunday school teacher for many years.  He also served as a representative for the Clemson University Extension Office for many decades.  Harold was a retired dairy farmer with his brothers, who owned Godwin Dairy Farm.  Upon retiring from that career, he and his wife, Marian, opened Godwin Poultry Farm in the 1990s and finally retired again at age 70.  He has resided in the assisted living facility at Dominion Senior Living in Clemson, SC, since 2020. 

The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM, Saturday, March 29, 2025, at Scranton Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be at 3:00 pm, Saturday, March 29, 2025, at Scranton Baptist Church. Burial with Military Honors will follow at High Hill Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.
