James "Buck" Coker, 85, died Tuesday, May 11, 2021, at his home in Coward, after an illness.
Mr. Coker was born on November 23, 1935 in Florence County, son of the late Joe H. Coker and Allie Barfield Coker. He graduated from J. C. Lynch High School and retired from Dupont in Florence after 32 years. He was a master mechanic who enjoyed working on cars and collecting coins. Buck was a chartered member of The Bible Temple in Coward where he served as Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and other leadership roles. He loved his family and church and was always willing to extend a helping hand.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Hyman Coker of Coward; children, Jimmy (Kathy) Coker of Olanta, Terry (Marie) Coker and Melanie (Joey) Prosser, both of Pamplico and Jay (Dot) Coker of Coward; grandchildren, Shay Coker, Kacey Turner, Kerry Coker, Bryan Haselden, Brandi Carter, Jordan Coker and Carter Coker; fourteen great grandchildren; sister, Nancy “Nank” Threatt of Lancaster; brothers, S.H. “Snooks” Coker of Bennettsville and J.H. Coker of Columbia.
Mr. Coker was preceded in death by his sisters, Margaret Prosser, Louetta Stickland, Eula Godwin, Oree Lee, and Naomi “Nay” Passailaigue; brothers, Foster Coker, Joe H. Coker, Bill Coker, Alfred Coker, Ben Coker and Cole L. Coker.
Funeral services will be 3:00 PM, Friday, May 14, 2021 at The Bible Temple, Coward, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 3:00 PM, Friday, May 14, 2021, at the church.
