Jessalyn Hoover Welch Thomas, 83, widow of F. W. “Tommy” Thomas, Jr., died Friday, January 14, 2022, at McLeod Hospice House in Florence, SC.
Mrs. Thomas was born November 19, 1938, in Florence County, a daughter of the late Walter Elward Hoover and Elnora Hanna Hoover Braddy. She was a graduate of Lake City High School and Francis Marion University. She retired after 28 years as a teacher with Florence District 3. While living in her hometown of Lake City, she had been an active member of Lake City Presbyterian Church where she was a deacon and sang in the choir until 1989. She was a loyal supporter of the arts and was an organizing member of the Lake City Concert Series. When she remarried, Mrs. Thomas joined the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church after moving to Kingstree.
Mrs. Thomas is survived by her two sons, Robert Emiel (Barbara) Welch, Jr. of Murrells Inlet and Dana Thomas (Nelwyn) Welch of Lake City; three grandsons, Robert Thomas Cole (Jennifer) Welch, James Bradley (Angie) Welch, and Samuel Robert (Hayli) Welch; a granddaughter, Jessalyn Bess Welch; one great-grandson, Connor Kemp; two great-granddaughters, Roxanne Olivia Welch and Lydia Kathleen Welch. Other surviving family members include a brother, Walter Elward (Sherry) Hoover of Saluda, NC; and a sister, Eleanor Todaro of Elizabethton, TN, along with many cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband Tommy, Jessalyn was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Emiel Welch, Sr., and their son, James Howard, and a sister, Claudia Nimmons.
A private family memorial service will be held.
