Jewel (Haselden) Matthews

Jewel Haselden Matthews, 84, widow of the late R. Milton Matthews Sr. went to be with her Lord and Savior in the early morning hours of Saturday, January 16, 2021, after a long illness.

Jewel was born in Scranton, the daughter of the late Thomas H. and Aileen Hamn Haselden. She was a graduate of Lake City High School and attended the Carolina College of Commerce in Florence. She retired from Florence County School District Three Adult/Community Education. She was a loyal member of the Lake City First Baptist Church.

Jewel was a wonderful wife, a loving mother, and a doting Ma-Ma to her five grandchildren. She was an outstanding cook, and loved to prepare meals for her family and friends, especially during the holidays. She was the epitome of a steel magnolia who fought her illnesses with courage and dignity until the very end.

Jewel leaves behind to cherish her memory, two sons: Robert Milton Matthews Jr. and his wife Maria of Lake City; James Thomas Matthews, and his wife Marla, of Florence; five grandchildren: Robert M. (Matt) Matthews III and his wife Evan of Charlotte, N.C., Katherine M. McGee and her husband Jared of Lake City; Jacob Cole Rodgers, Ethan Thomas Matthews, and James Mason Matthews all of Florence. Her brother, Thomas H. Haselden, Jr., nephew, Eric Haselden and his wife Kathy , and a host of cousins and close friends. She was predeceased by an infant son, David Scott Matthews, sister-in-law, Mollie A. Matthews, sister-in-law, Sylvia Y. Haselden and a nephew, Mark A. Haselden.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, January 18, 2021 at 1:00 PM at Lake City Memorial Park.
