Obituary

Mr. John W. Evans, 76, of Lake City, husband of Faye Evans, passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at McLeod Hospice, Florence.

On November 27, 1948, John W. Evans was born in Florence County, son of the late Harry R. Evans and Etta Lurene Evans. Mr. Evans was a hardworking and dedicated man who gave over 38 years of service to Wellman and an additional 16 years to Poole Company. He was a devoted and lifelong member of Little Star Free Will Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as a deacon for more than 30 years, taught Sunday School, and often helped lead worship.

His love for his church extended far beyond the doors of the sanctuary. He took great responsibility and pride in maintaining the church cemetery, tending it with the same reverence and care he had for the people laid to rest there. From trimming and cleaning to checking headstones and keeping the grounds neat, he made sure everything was well cared for, believing it to be an act of service and respect for both families and his church community.

Affectionately known to many as “Little John,” he had a good sense of humor and could bring a smile to any room, yet he was also firm and unwavering in his values. He enjoyed fishing, trips to the mountains and to Santee, and treasured time spent with his family. A faithful Christian, he lived what he believed — serving others quietly, loving his church deeply, and setting an example of steady devotion and commitment.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Faye Evans; daughters, Sheila (James) Richardson, Morresville, NC and Sharon (Allan) Matthews of Lake City; son, Will (Penny) Evans of Lake City; grandchildren, Austin Richardson, Laura Leigh Richardson, Jacob Matthews, Matthew (Brittany) Lamb, Cierra Lamb, Connor Evans and Slade Fennell; great grandchildren, Gracelyn Prosser, Easton Lamb and Annalise Lamb; sisters, Dianne Wells of Gainesville, FL, Cynthia (Rick) Williamson of Leesville, SC and Chasity (Kipp) Coker of Manning, SC.

Mr. Evans was preceded in death by a brother, Norman Evans and an aunt, Lonnie Mae Evans.
