Mr. John Joseph Filyaw, 94, passed away Monday, October 2, 2023, at Savannah, Georgia after a brief illness.
Mr. Filyaw was born on September 30, 1929, in Cades, son of the late William Matthew Filyaw and Ruby Gladys Conyers Filyaw. He was a member of Hebron Independent Church. Mr. Filyaw retired from the United States Army, and was stationed in Korea, Germany, and various army posts in the United States including Fort Hood, Fort Jackson, Fort Bragg and Fort Wainwright, Alaska. After his retirement from the army, he owned several small businesses in Savannah, Georgia and in Kent, Washington. Mr. Filyaw loved reading, fishing and playing with his grandchildren.
Surviving are his children, Russ (Lawanda) Filyaw of Moody, Texas, Barbara Shiels of Pembroke, Georgia, Annette O’Quinn of Ellabelle, Georgia, Wayne M. (Gracie) Filyaw of Port Charlotte, Florida, Denise Joy of Savannah, Georgia, Faith Fishel of Atlanta, Georgia; step-children, Joel (Toni) Higgins of Black Diamond, Washington, Cynthia (Warren) Heller of Savannah, Georgia; 18 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
Mr. Filyaw was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Dorcas Smith Filyaw; siblings, Celesta Mims McCutcheon, Curtis Filyaw, Delos Filyaw, Wilbur Filyaw and Wesley Filyaw.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of John Wesley Nursing Facility, Savannah, Geogia, for their love and exceptional care given to him during his final days.
Funeral services will be 3:00 PM, Sunday, October 8, 2023, at Hebron Independent Church, with burial to follow in Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
