Obituary

Mr. John Wesley “Jay” Miles, 79, husband of Lou Taylor Miles, passed away Thursday, June 19, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Miles was born on, December 28, 1945, in Florence County, son of the late Tillman Miles and Mae Bell Welch Miles. A devoted husband and family man, he was a humble soul who lived a life grounded in faith, service, and love. He was a faithful member of Family Worship Assembly, where he served diligently as a deacon and a Sunday School teacher for over 20 years. Known as a “Man of God,” Mr. Miles had a deep love for reading his Bible and was truly dedicated to his church and family.

He retired as an electrician from Fluor Daniels after many years of dedicated service. Outside of work, he found joy in life’s simple pleasures of fishing, and spending time with his family and going to church.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 42 years, Lou Taylor Miles; daughters, Sheila (Sammy) Christmas and Charlene Baxley both of Sumter, Cheryl Bunte of Coward and Teresa (Jay) Caples of Sumter; grandchildren, Victoria Bundy and Johnathan (Madison) Baxley both of Sumter, Dustin Bunte of Texas, Derek Cornett, Christopher Caples, and Crystal Caples all of Sumter, and Jennifer (Shane) Prince of Lake City, his caretaker and the apple of his eye; many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; brother, Legran (Rosemary) Miles of Florence; special nieces, Melinda Wilson of Myrtle Beach and Johnlyn (Mikie) Nettles of Lake City.

Mr. Miles was preceded in death by his grandson, Chad Touchberry; siblings, Marion “MC” Miles, Dot Gaskins, Thelma Floyd, Elsie Lyman, Alex Miles, Nancy Lee and Roger Miles.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, Monday, June 23,  2025, at Family Worship Assembly.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Monday, June 23, 2025, at Family Worship Assembly. Burial to follow at Scranton United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to, Amedisys Hospice staff, Brooke Creel and Robin Hancock and MUSC Home Health nurse, Shay Altman, for their compassionate care, support and kindness, that was given to Mr. Miles and his family.
