Obituary

Mr. Larry Linwood “Dobbin” Poston, cherished member of the Hannah and Lake City Community, passed peacefully, December 14, 2024 at McLeod Hospice House, Florence, SC.

Mr. Poston was born on January 21, 1937, in Hyman, to the late James Leo Poston and Evelyn Ard Poston.  Upon the death of his parents, he was raised by his Aunt Nealie Poston & Uncle Sam Poston and Miss Myrtle Poston of Hannah.

He was a 1955 graduate of Hannah High School where he excelled at sports. Upon his graduation, Mr. Poston attended Presbyterian College on an academic scholarship where he played baseball.  After his graduation in  1959, he began his teaching and coaching career at Brittons Neck High School and later at Hannah Pamplico High School, where he stayed until his retirement. “Coach Poston” as he was affectionally called, coached football, baseball, golf and basketball, where he held, head and assistant coaching titles.  He continued in his latter years to attend various sporting events where he would announce games as part of the “Voice of the Raiders”.  Mr. Poston was honored to be inducted in the  “Hannah Pamplico Hall of Fame” in 2021.

After his retirement from the school district, Mr. Poston continued to work for the Florence County Tax Office, Lake City Walmart and was co-owner of Poston-Coleman Driving School.

Mr. Poston faithfully served his country in the US Army Reserve. He was also a farmer and farmed in the Hannah and Friendfield communities. Mr. Poston worked for many years at the Lake City tobacco warehouses as a tobacco recorder.

Mr. Poston was a Mason and a past Master of Hannah Lodge #298.  He was also a past President of the Lake City Lion’s Club where he was “Lion of the Year” 2002.

He was a member of Lake City United Methodist Church where he volunteered his time in various activities.

Mr. Poston was a very loving husband, father, PaPa, uncle and friend.  Whether it was volunteering with the Lake City Boy Scouts, coaching Legion Ball or delivering Meals on Wheels, he always loved and cared for his community and never met a stranger.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 57 years, Martha Tucker Poston; daughter, Doralynn (Glynn) Streett; son, Larry L. “Woody” (Jenny) Poston; grandchildren, Jamie (Daniel) Pasker, Ashley Yarborough and John Poston; step-grandchildren Chelsea (Zach) Richardson, Dylan Streett, Richard (Taylor) Streett; brother-in-law, Engrim Tucker; sisters-in-law, Janis Tucker and Jean Poston; special great niece, Amanda Poston and 5 step great grandchildren; special friends, Robbie Perry, Roger Bazen and Sammy Singletary.

Mr. Poston was preceded in death by his brothers, Douglas Poston, William “Buddy” Poston, Andrew “Demp” Poston; sister, Carolyn Cox; son-in-law, Ricky Yarborough.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM, Sunday, December 15, 2024, at Carolina Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be, 11:00 AM, Monday, December 16, 2024, at Lake City United Methodist Church, with burial to follow at Lake City Memorial Park.
