Mary Sue Miles Obituary

Mary Sue Miles, 93, wife of the late Hinnant Miles, passed away early Saturday morning, April 29, 2023, at her home in Scranton surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Mary Sue was born on October 4, 1929 in Florence County, a daughter of the late James Sellers Matthews and Sue Lee Matthews. She was a faithful servant of the Lord and served in many areas of her church. She was a charter member of Lee’s Tabernacle and served in every position of the Lady’s Ministry including assistant Sunday School Teacher for the Ladies Bible Class. She believed in the power of prayer and was an anointed prayer warrior right up until her home going.

She ministered to many people in the community through her wonderful gift of cooking as well as her talent as a seamstress. She could often be found in her kitchen making pound cakes and chewies for her family. Everyone knew when you came to her home there was always a cake on the counter and something good on the stove. When she wasn't in the kitchen, she was in her sewing room doing something for someone out of the kindness of her heart. She was always hemming pants, sewing patches or making outfits for her grandchildren when they were younger.

She graduated from Scranton High School in 1946. She was voted neatest in her class, and she held that title until her last breath.

She was loved and adored by her family and was the foundation and the glue that held them all together. She loved and prayed for her family each and every day and was happiest when they were all together. She was an example of everything good in the world and God's true unconditional love.

Mrs. Mary Sue is survived by her children, Steve (Debbie) Miles of Florence and Kevin (Penny Burleson) Miles of Scranton; grandchildren, Amber (Drew) Huggins of Florence, Amanda (Matt) Hanna of Lake City, Jennifer (Thomas) Welch of Brewer, ME and Stuart Miles of Scranton; great-grandchildren, Paisley Hanna, Roxanne Welch, Anna Kate Huggins, Carson Hanna, Sellers Huggins, Mary Kearsten Hanna and Lydia Welch; brother, James “Gerald” Matthews of Florence and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Linnie Ruth Hanna and brother, Charles “Homer” Matthews.
