Mrs. Nancy Jane Baxley Matthews, 80, wife of Jay Matthews, passed away Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at her home in Effingham.
Mrs. Matthews was born on May 1, 1944, in Florence County, daughter of the late James Brad Baxley and Neily Powers Baxley. She was a graduate of McClenaghan High School and retired from GE.
Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Jay Lewis Matthews of Effingham; children, Cheryl Matthews (Dalton) McFaddin of Lake City, Michael J. (Sandra Elizabeth) Matthews of Wake Forest, NC and Tammy Matthews (Brad) Singletary of Pamplico; grandchildren Courtney Erin Matthews, Hunter Lynch Singletary, Emily Brianne Matthews, Dylan Matthew McFaddin and Cole Bradford Singletary; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members .
Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by her siblings, Van E. “Jug” Baxley, Mary Olive Baxley Avant, James Allen Baxley, Lillian Baxley Johnson, Ruby Mae Baxley Howell, Eloise Baxley Hutchinson and Linda Sue Baxley Kiker.
The family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to McLeod Hospice, Sabrina Singletary, Reverend Scott Ard and Sandy Williams; Comfort Keepers & Victoria Burgess.
The family will receive friends 2:00 – 3:00 PM, Sunday, February 2, 2025, at Carolina Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be 3:00 PM, Sunday, February 2, 2025, at Carolina Funeral Home Chapel, Scranton, with burial to follow at Baxley Cemetery, Johnsonville.
