Obituary

Mr. Phillip Henry Poston, 71, of Pamplico, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at McLeod Hospice House.

Mr. Poston was born on December 7, 1952, in Florence County, son of the late Henry Poston and Mary Evans Poston. He was a 1971 graduate of Hannah-Pamplico High School and attended Tabernacle Methodist Church of Pamplico. For over 45 years “BIG” Phillip was a coach for many local pony league, colt league, and All Star baseball teams as well as a softball team and basketball teams. He spent almost that amount of time umpiring and refereeing for baseball, softball, basketball and volleyball. He prided himself on knowing the rule book backwards and forwards and was quick to challenge the umpire when he was on the opposite side of the uniform. Many people have stories of Phillip giving them a ride to and from a game or sharing a couple of dollars when they needed it. He was generous and thought only with his heart. He was a Mason member. He loved to travel and try every seafood restaurant he could find. He had a motto about tipping a waitress too. He would tip her based on how well he kept his glass of tea full!

Surviving are his sister, Patricia “Pat” Poston (Jerry) Carnell of Pamplico; nieces, Pamela “Pam” Carnell Brice of Charlottesville, VA and Frances Evans Poston of Destin, FL; nephews, Dr. Tyler Lewis (Dr. Megan) Poston of Birmingham, AL and Jordan Barnette (MaKayla) Poston of Birmingham, AL; aunts, Jo Ellen Poston Hodge of Atlanta, GA and Cynthia Fisher Poston of Florence; sister-in-law, Laura Gunn Poston of Birmingham, AL; best friend, Bobby H. Bazen of Pamplico; and many cousins and extended family.

Mr. Poston was preceded in death by a brother, Alvin Fulton Poston.
