Obituary

Reverend Dexter L. “Nook” Matthews, 83, a devoted servant of God and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, entered into his eternal rest on Sunday, March 9, 2025, at his home in Scranton, surrounded by the love and prayers of his family.

Born on October 26, 1941, in Florence County, Rev. Matthews was the beloved son of the late Montry and Alma Lee Matthews. He answered the call of ministry early in life and dedicated more than 35 years to shepherding God's people, pastoring at Moselle, UNA, Olanta, Piney Grove, and Wrens Chapel. Even after retiring from full-time ministry, he remained a steadfast and faithful member of Pleasant Grove Church of God of Prophecy, continuing to serve the Lord with humility and grace.

Rev. Matthews was a man of unwavering faith, whose life was a testament to the love and mercy of Jesus Christ. He walked in the footsteps of his Savior, leading countless souls to Christ through his gentle spirit, kind words, and unwavering dedication to the Gospel. Whether standing in the pulpit or sitting at the bedside of a friend in need, he carried the light of God wherever he went. His faith was his foundation, and his love for the Lord was evident in every sermon preached, every hand held, and every heart he uplifted.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 63 years, Beulah Mae Miles Matthews of Scranton, who stood faithfully by his side in life and ministry. Together, they built a home filled with love, laughter, and faith. Their children, Pam (Rick) Merck of Norris and Glen (Kathy) Matthews of Lake City, were blessed to witness his unwavering devotion to his family and his calling. He was a proud grandfather to Breanna (Dylan) Matthews, Kyle Merck, Leah Matthews, and Jay Floyd and a cherished great-grandfather to Emerie Matthews and River Matthews. His legacy of faith continues through them.

Rev. Matthews is also survived by his siblings, Randolph “Spud” (Carolyn) Matthews, Deloris “Tooney” Miles, and Judy Norwood (Jim Nelson); sister-in-law, Tammy Matthews; and brothers-in-law, Billy Scott, Robert (Libby) James, and James (Iris) Kirby, along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family members whom he loved dearly.

He now rejoices in heaven with those who have gone before him, including his infant daughter, Linda Darlene Matthews; his siblings, Legrand Matthews, Selva Jean Bruton, Annette Scott, Martha Ann Kirby, Patricia Ann “Tiny” James, and Jack Steve Matthews; brothers-in-law, Tommy Bruton, Tommy Miles and Frank “Buddy” Norwood; sister-in-law, Levone Matthews and a host of loving nephews.

Rev. Matthews finished his race with faith and endurance, stepping into the arms of his Savior and hearing the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Though his voice has been silenced on this earth, his sermons will echo in the hearts of those who were blessed to know him.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Friday, March 14, 2025, at Carolina Funeral Home. A celebration of his life and legacy will follow at 3:00 PM in the Carolina Funeral Home Chapel, with a private burial.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Retired Ministers Fund, Church of God of Prophecy, 6 Elmhurst Drive, Greenville, SC 29611, in honor of Rev. Matthews’ lifelong commitment to ministry.

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." — 2 Timothy 4:7
