Reverend George Hobson "Sonny" Gray Obituary

Reverend George Hobson “Sonny” Gray, 86, of Coward, husband of Lucille Stone Gray, went home to be with his Lord, Thursday, January 25, 2024, at McLeod Regional Medical Center of the Pee Dee, surrounded by his family.

Reverend Gray was born on January 1, 1938, in Florence County, son of the late James Duncan Gray, Sr. and Mincie Evans Gray. Reverend Gray served in the United States Army as an Artillery Sergeant from 1955-1958. He was awarded “The Army Good Conduct Medal” for exemplary behavior, efficiency and fidelity in active Federal Military Service. His life’s passion was sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Reverend Gray began preaching in 1965 and in 1968 he began preaching at High Hill Church of God of Prophecy. He attended “The Bible Training Institute” in Cleveland, TN. Over the course of 50 years, Reverend Gray preached and pastored in South Carolina as well as Florida and then returned “Home” to High Hill in 1992. Reverend Gray loved the Lord, his wife Lucille, his children, Donna Lynn and Michael, his grandchildren, his church, the church family and he truly devoted his life to them. Reverend Gray was a true visionary, a man well before his time. He had a vision for the church and his ministry and from that he never wavered. He would use any occasion to “preach you a sermon”. Often times you would get a beautiful hymn sung or played on the piano, or both to go with that sermon. Reverend Gray worked many years as a full-time electrician for Dupont and International Paper, as well as being a full-time pastor. He truly dedicated his life to serving others through the ministry of Jesus Christ.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Lucille Stone Gray of Coward; son, Michael Allen (Melissa) Gray of Coward; daughter, Donna Lynn Pagan of Lake City; grandsons, Derrick Graziani, Daniel Levi Graziani, and Joseph Justin Lourcey; granddaughters, Dedra Lynn Graziani, Skyler Cheyenne Lourcey, Isabella Addison Gray, and Scarlett Elizabeth Gray; 14 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild on the way; brother, Bob (Gail) Gray; brother-in-law, Herman Hutchinson; special niece, Joyce (C.L.) Allen and a host of friends.
