Obituary

James S. Wise Sr., affectionately known as "Steve Wise," passed away peacefully, January 15, 2025, at 5:20 PM. Born on October 25, 1937, in Coward, South Carolina, Steve was the beloved son of the late Stephen Cromwell Wise and Evelyn Mathews Wise.

Steve graduated from J.C. Lynch High School in the Class of 1955, where he built lifelong friendships and developed the strong values that guided him throughout his life. He married Ann Hyman Wise, of Scranton, South Carolina, the love of his life and devoted partner of many years. Together, they shared a life of love, faith, and family until Ann’s passing on May 23, 2021.

Steve proudly served his country with distinction. His military career began in the United States Navy, where he worked as a cryptographic specialist for two years. He then transitioned to the United States Air Force, dedicating over 20 years of service. He started as a recruiter and later served as a loadmaster in the prestigious 41st Airlift Squadron at Charleston Air Force Base. Among his many accomplishments, Steve had the honor of serving Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Reagan during their presidential travels, transporting essential cargo and personnel on historic missions to destinations such as China and Russia.

Beyond his military achievements, Steve was a successful entrepreneur and community leader. He was the past owner of A & S Auto Parts and co-owner of Daniels Hardware Company in Lake City, South Carolina, which he operated alongside his father-in-law, Ralph Hyman. After selling A & S Auto Parts, Steve worked with Parks Auto Parts and later left to assist his son at Carolina Nurseries in Moncks Corner, where he served as the Service Department Supervisor. In this role, Steve was responsible for the preventive maintenance and repair of numerous trucks, tractors, and large equipment, ensuring smooth operations and efficiency.

A man of unwavering integrity, humility, and kindness, Steve was admired and loved by all who knew him. His humor, strong character, and devotion to his family and community left a lasting legacy. Steve will be deeply missed but forever remembered by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.

He is survived by his only son, James Stephen Wise Jr., who will carry forward his legacy of love, strength, and honor; his brother, Norman Cornell (Cecile) Wise and many nieces and nephews.

Steve was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Wise Braveboy, of Coward, SC.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.
