Sybil (Benton) Matthews

Mrs. Sybil Benton Matthews, 83, died Saturday, May 22, 2021, at MUSC in Florence.

Mrs. Matthews was born in Florence County, October 16, 1937 to the late Wylie B. Benton and Leona Locklair Benton. Sybil was first married to the late Elijah “Pat” Matthews. She was a homemaker and self-employed farmer. Mrs. Matthews was a charter member of Family Worship Assembly, where she served many positions, including, Sunday School teacher, Secretary and Choir member. She served on the advisory board for the Farm Service Agency in Florence. Sybil was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving are her husband, Jimmy Haselden; sons, Rev. Warren (Janis) Matthews and Dennis (Wanda) Matthews; daughter, Cricket (Joey) Coward; grandchildren, Stacy (Shep) Stone, Dee (Farrar) Snowden, Patrick (Tiffany) Matthews, Denny (Ashley) Matthews, Heath (Jessica) Matthews, Zachary Coward, Chandler Coward, Kathy (Chad) Snyder and Teresa Dease; great grandchildren, Hunter, Avery, Walker, Ben, Olivia, Emma, Landon, Addison, Taylor, Mallory, Julian, Jordan, Gavin, Hailey, Hunter, Aiden and Weston.

She was preceded in death by her daughters, Melanie Matthews and Betty McCutcheon; great grandchildren, Anna Snowden and Jentzen Stone; siblings, Gwen (Jerry) Shealy, Wesley (Mary) Benton and Alice (Ed) Taylor.

Funeral services will be 3:00 PM, Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at Family Worship Assembly, with burial to follow in Matthews Cemetery, Coward.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Monday, May 24, 2021, at Carolina Funeral Home and other times at the home of Rev. Warren and Janis Matthews, 2019 Friendfield Road, Scranton, SC 29591.
