Mrs. Sybil S. Gowdy, 90, of Cades, widow of John Earl Gowdy, Sr., passed away Sunday, June 2, 2024, at MUSC Black River Medical Center.
Mrs. Gowdy was born on January 15, 1934, in Williamsburg County, daughter of the late David Ernest Smith and Evelyn Driggers Smith. She was a member of Hebron United Methodist Church and was a bookkeeper for 50 plus years at Santee Electrical Co-Op. She loved working in her yards, cooking, but most of all she loved her family and her church family.
Surviving are her grandchildren, Jonathan Gowdy of Manning, Laura (Justin) McKenzie of Hemingway, Benjamin Gowdy of Cades, and Christopher (Ashley) Owens of Florence; great grandchildren, Bryce Gowdy, Tyler Gowdy, Tiffany Allen, Dylan Hysong, Evan McKenzie, Kristin McKenzie, Madison Berkenstock and Chantz McKenzie; great great grandchild, Emerson McKenzie; daughters-in-law, Sharon Feagin Gowdy, Brenda Gowdy and Pam Gowdy; siblings, Frankie Baxley, Myra (David) Nesbitt, Edie (Mike) Ater and Cecil (Sandy) Smith.
Mrs. Gowdy was preceded in death by her two sons, John Earl Gowdy, Jr. and Kevin L. Gowdy; siblings, Rita Smith, Keith Smith, Donald Smith, Jack Smith, James Hugh Smith, David Smith and Clyde Smith.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at Carolina Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, June 6, 2024, at Hebron United Methodist Church, with burial to follow at the church cemetery.
