Florence – Travis Welton Ragsdale, 74, husband of Kathy Smith Ragsdale, passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2026 at MUSC Florence.
Travis was born on October 23, 1951 in Greenville, SC a son of the late Welton Ragsdale and Sarah Coker Ragsdale. He graduated from Wren High School, then after graduating from Furman University with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, he began a teaching career at Francis Marion University that would last over 47 years. As a chemistry lab professor, Travis taught both levels of organic and inorganic chemistry. His love for teaching enabled him to interact and cater to the needs of each individual student without any bias or prejudice.
Mr. Ragsdale became a fixture in a strong academic program at Francis Marion University by teaching, supervising, advising and tutoring students. He never turned a student away or thought that a student was not capable of greatness.
In addition to his desire to inspire students, Travis found inspiration in his hobbies - a life-long passion for photography, a love of music, playing guitar and target shooting. He had a special place in his heart for stray cats which led him to build sophisticated heated cat boxes for their comfort.
Travis was a long time member of College Park Baptist Church, serving in various capacities including Deacon, Sunday School Director and Teacher and long-time Choir Member. He was a dependable and dedicated member who was willing to do whatever was needed.
Travis is survived by his wife, Kathy; additionally he is survived by his sister, Jan R. Wilson and her husband, Jimmy, of Edgefield; niece, Melissa Smith of Rock Hill; father-in-law, Robert Smith; brothers-in-law Mike and Dave Smith all of Rock Hill; and many extended family members.
