After a long illness, Van Raye (McCants) Ritchie departed this life in the early evening hours Thursday, November 6, 2025, at her home in Myrtle Beach. Her husband, Kim Ritchie was at her side. A devout Christian, she was known for a gentle spirit and selfless heart; a more humble and gracious soul could not be found.
Born December 9, 1941, Van Raye was the firstborn and only daughter of Raymond Otis McCants and Vernell “Vernie” Garner McCants. She grew up and spent most of her life in the Oak Ridge community west of Andrews, South Carolina.
Van Raye worked for many years in accounting at Oneita Knitting Mills and later with other local and regional businesses, including Litchfield by the Sea in Pawleys Island. For a time, she served faithfully as Secretary/Treasurer of Oak Ridge Pentecostal Holiness Church.
A devoted granddaughter, Van Raye lovingly cared for her grandmother, Pearl McCants, for many years. Her extended family — cousins, nieces, nephews, and goddaughters — brought her tremendous pride and joy. She loved flowers, was fascinated by the weather, and lived each day with quiet grace and kindness.
Van Raye is survived by her husband, Kim Ritchie; stepchildren, Kim J. and Meeja, and her brother, Ricky Otis McCants. She was predeceased by her parents; three brothers, Patrick, Alvino, and Gregg McCants; and by her beloved aunt, Virginia Duncan, whom she cherished as a mother.
A graveside service for family will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, November 10, 2025, at Oak Ridge Cemetery, with Rev. Donald Duncan officiating. Although the service will be very small, the family is proud to use A’bloom Florist in Lake City, 843.374.9425.
