Obituary

Mr. Watson Leverne “Speedy” Gaskins, 86, husband of the late Shirley Inez Gaskins, passed away Thursday, May 1, 2025, at McLeod Regional Medical Center of the Pee Dee surrounded by his family.

Mr. Gaskins was born on January 19, 1939, in Florence County, son of the late Herman Theophilus Gaskins and Thelma Belflower Gaskins. A lifelong and devoted member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Mr. Gaskins served faithfully as a Deacon for 11 years and as the Sunday School Treasurer. His love for the Lord was evident in all he did, and he was rarely seen without his favorite hat that read, “Jesus Is My Boss.” That hat often opened the door for him to ask one of his favorite questions: “Do You Know Jesus?”

Mr. Gaskins deeply loved his wife, affectionately known as “Peaches,” and took great pride in his three daughters, his “Sissy Gals,” as well as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He worked many years as a mechanic at Delta Mills, Ford Tractor and Marshall’s Marine before retiring at the age of 83. Known for his strong work ethic and remarkable skill with his hands, he could fix just about anything. Many of his favorite places to eat were, The School House Restaurant, Burger King, and The Shrimper, where he enjoyed spending time with friends and family.

Mr. Gaskins leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and service. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Surviving are his daughters, Donna (Robert) Black of Fort Myers, FL, Wanda Lee of Pamplico and Tina (John) Outlaw of Florence; grandchildren, Jeremy Davis and Adrian (Kristen) Davis of Fort Myers, FL, DJ (Kara) Lee of Scranton, Steven (Hope) Lee of Florence, William (Mitchell) Outlaw of Greenville, Mary Catherine Outlaw of Columbia and Rachel Grace Outlaw of Florence; great grandchildren, Owen Heenan-Davis, Lawson Heenan-Davis, Evelyn Davis and Eleanor Davis, all of Fort Myers, FL, Kyler Lee of Scranton and Jessie Outlaw of Greenville.

Mr. Gaskins was preceded in death by his siblings, Clifton Lugene Gaskins and Barbara Gaskins Platt.
