Willie Deleon Weatherford, 92, husband of Vivian Altman Weatherford, died Monday, May 21, 2018, at his residence.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Wednesday, May 23, 2018, at Scranton United Methodist Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the fellowship hall.
Mr. Weatherford was born on April 20, 1926 in Florence, son of the late Reverend Luther Weatherford and Louise Feagin Weatherford. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy serving in World War II and was the owner of Weatherford and Sons Construction Company. Mr. Weatherford was a member of Scranton United Methodist Church for 65 years where he served as Sunday School teacher and Sunday School Superintendent. He was a past member of the Lions Club. Mr. Weatherford was instrumental in starting the Cub Scouts and the first baseball team for youth in Scranton and built the original baseball field known as Weatherford Ballpark. He was one of the original founding members of the Scranton Fire and Rescue Squad and was recognized along with the other members in 2007 by Senator Hugh Leatherman for their contributions to Fire and Rescue.
Surviving are his wife, Vivian Altman Weatherford of Scranton; daughter, Elaine W. (June) Raines of Irmo and Nancy W. (Joe) Baroody of Florence; son, James D. (Cathy) Weatherford of Myrtle Beach and Joel R. (Deanna) Weatherford of Friendfield; grandchildren, Callie S. (Kevin) Scully, Joseph M. Baroody, Blakely B. (Samuel) Arthur, Tyler Weatherford, Wesley (Robin) Poston, Reggie Weatherford and Sydney (Justin) Lee; eleven great grandchildren.
